ST MICHAEL, Minnesota — This past weekend, Minnesota experienced intense weather, including high winds, hail, heavy rain, thunder, and lightning.

As residents start to deal with the aftermath of the storm, reports from Big Lake have surfaced about “storm chasers” canvassing neighborhoods. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) warns that these individuals are often fraudulent contractors who take advantage of storm victims.

“Homeowners just need to be careful. We unfortunately see this happen after big storms. People from out-of-state come here, and I just encourage homeowners to do their research,” explained Chris Cohen, senior project manager at Frontline Roofing and Restoration.

The problem of roofing and restoration fraud is widespread and not confined to Minnesota. Scammers frequently offer free inspections post-storm, exaggerating damage to convince homeowners to fund unnecessary repairs or replacements. The BBB has consistently cautioned against such roofing scams.

Cohen recommends that homeowners seek out local or state-based companies and verify their licensing. He highlights the importance of personal recommendations.

“Some of the most trusted companies can come from referrals from family, friends, and neighbors,” Cohen noted.

If you believe you have been targeted by a roofing scam, it is crucial to report the incident to local authorities and file a claim with the Minnesota Department of Revenue.
